The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) was founded on February 1, 1947. Its aims, as stipulated in Article 4*, are to "promote scientific culture, expand the industrial economy, and improve the quality of people’s lives by furthering the development of automobile science and technology."

In June 1947, JSAE was sanctioned as a corporation by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of International Trade & Industry and the Ministry of Transport. In 1981, it became a member of the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies and was registered with the Science Council of Japan as an academic society three years later.

When JSAE was first established, its members numbered only 1,500. Today, with the growth of Japan’s automobile industry, membership has swelled to over 40,000 members and JSAE is recognized as a leading scientific society in Japan.

The organization comprises a number of committees under the Boards of Technology, Publishing, Standards, Education and Planning and all. Members of each committee voluntarily participate in a range of activities in order to exchange information on automotive technologies and to pursue innovation.

Association Activity :

1. Investigation and Research

The Technology Board establishes committees composed of high level engineers who work to achieve solutions by carrying out investigations and research and by promoting activities geared toward the integration of automobile technologies. The results are widely disseminated throughout membership by means of symposia and reports.

2. Symposia and Annual Congress
Symposia: JSAE symposia are held 8 to 10 times a year and present the most up-to-date infomation in automotive technology and the other related fields.Annual Congress: JSAE holds two congresses annually, one in the spring and one in the autumn. The spring congress takes place in the Tokyo area, while 5 local branches take turns to host the autumn congress. At these conventions, the latest research results on automobile and other related technologies are presented. The spring congress also offers presentations in English.

3. The Automotive Engineering Exhibition
The Automotive Engineering Exhibition: The Automotive Engineering Exhibition takes place annually at the spring convention. It is the only exhibition of its kind in Japan, providing a large-scale international forum where engineers and exhibitors at the cutting edge of automotive technologies can exchange information.

4. Publications
Under the publication board, JSAE publishes all kinds of material related to the automotive technology and knowledge that have been accumulated over the years. They include research/test results presented at the conventions and symposiums. All publications are now in Japanese with the exception of the English journal, JSAE Review. But JSAE intends to be more open to the world.

5. Standardization
The Standardization Board establishes and revises automobile standards (JASO), prepares draft JIS standards, and discusses the drawing up of international standards. Standards are classified into four levels: in-house, associate (e.g. JASO), national (e.g. JIS), and international (e.g. ISO). These four levels form a pyramid, as shown in the diagram. Moving from in-house standards at the base up through the various levels to international standards at the top, the standards are progressively to take on the common elements. The content of the standards corresponds to regional aims at each level, while the 1995 WTO/TBT Agreement calls for a harmonized consistency, using the international standards as a basis of the national and associate standards.
